Reading the board
Before cutting begins, boards are laid out at full length and read from several directions. Colour, growth rings, knots and cathedral grain all influence which edges should meet.
A composed surface
The aim is not to erase natural variation. It is to arrange it. A successful top feels inevitable even when the eye can still follow the story of each board.
